High blood sugar and menstrual cycles, or early menopause?
Does anyone here know if having a spike in blood sugar can bring on a period? I had a problem yesterday where my blood sugar spiked. I got really sick from it, and today I started my period, but I’m not due to start for two more weeks. My husband’s 1st wife was diabetic and said she had a lot of problems with her cycles due to this, but it doesn’t seem that it spiking once would cause this. So, I’m trying to figure out if it’s due to blood sugar or possibly signs of early menopause. Two months ago, I skipped a month, so something is out of whack. Any personal situations like this? I had gestational diabetes with my son two years ago, so the possibility of diabetes is there. However, I check periodically and haven’t had a problem, until yesterday, when I ate something that spiked it.
my cycles are EXTREMELY regular, that’s what has me wondering. I’m trying to get some ideas before I go to the dr. These days, you have to do that or they just rush you in and out without any answers! I’ve learned to go in with a list of symptoms first, and an idea of what I think it might be.
I had gestational diabetes 2 1/2 yrs. ago, and that means my chances of developing diabetes is much higher than the average person’s, so I check it periodically. I only checked it the other day because I was extremely sick. My speech was slurred, I couldn’t form my words, etc. I was about to go to the er, but I’m not the type to run to the dr. unless I really feel I need to. So I checked my blood pressure, it was fine. Then I realized those are signs of a blood sugar issue, and it was really high, considering it was 1 1/2 hours after I ate something I shouldn’t have, which means that it was high enough prior to that to make me as sick as I was. After doing things to lower that even more, I wasn’t as sick, so I didn’t bother going to the er. Within three hours, I was fine again. I only mentioned my husband’s 1st wife to say that he has experience with this, and what he told me.
Ten years ago my sister, at the age I am now, began missing periods occasionally, having more than one other times. She now knows it was signs of early menopause, but didn’t think anything about it at the time. When you are as regular as I am, it IS a big deal when you miss, or have more than one in a month, and I’m trying to figure out if my blood sugar is affecting my cycles, or if I could be entering early menopause. We’re trying to have another baby, otherwise it wouldn’t matter. And no, at this point the hormone levels wouldn’t show a drop, because it’s too early. They only show a drop closer to menopause. My sister’s dr. said basically that when you have gone for six months without a period, you’ve hit menopause. Not very scientific. That’s why I’m looking for people who have experienced what I’m talking about.
